The objective for my blog this semester is to fulfill all of the requirements for the class and have fun doing so. I am not familiar with blogs so I will most likely be fumbling my way through for a while.

Final Project Proposal
For my final project I would like to explore the character of Robert
Neville if he had been a classical hero and then I would annalyze in an
essay the differences along with the origins of the classical hero. I found the discusion about whether or not Robert was a hero very interesting and I want to explore how the story would change if he had the characteristics of a real hero.

I like your focus on the concept of hero and how it applies to different characters. I feel like your final project will draw attention to the fact that heroes do not always come in the same packages. I like your idea of comparing Neville to a "classic" hero because, although I'm sure that anyone who has read the book would consider him a hero, most may not look at him as the classic hero.
ReplyDeleteI would only recommend that you describe the "classic hero" in depth, although you are probably already planning on doing that.
yep absolutely
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great project. It will be interesting to see you explore the way in which the classic idea of "the hero" has been complicated in these vampire novels. I think Neville is perhaps the most complex "heroic" figure, precisely because it seems that Matheson is really trying to show how contingent our concepts of "heroism" can be. You might want to consider exploring how the vampire figure deconstructs ideas of the hero and why that is the case. The vampire itself is a character that inherently "blurs" boundaries and binarisms--neither living nor dead, neither male nor female, etc. Perhaps this particular type of monster also blurs the boundaries of traditional concepts of heroism?
